The structure of the music industry: In evolved markets like the US, Europe, Japan and some others, the music industry comprises the songwriters (and their publishers), the performers (and their managers), the producers, the manufacturers, the distributors (these three functions being mostly carried out by the record companies), the entertainment lawyers, the PR companies and the touring agents. In less evolved – or more traditional – markets, like India, all these functions are performed by the record company. To complete the picture of the music industry, we must add the retailers, the music magazines, the radio and music TV networks and, last but not least, the collective copyright collection societies like, in India, the IPRS and the PPL.
